The Mayor-Elect confirms his intention to reside in the iconic Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that was a central issue during his election bid.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for most New York City mayors after the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central platform, hesitated to declare this decision immediately after his victory in November.
"My choice came down to keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing all of my focus on carrying out the platform on affordability voters voted for," Mamdani said on Monday.
Thanking a Neighborhood
He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area renowned for its abundance of immigrant populations and international dining.
"To the people of Astoria: thank you for exemplifying the best of New York City," he noted.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, Astoria will always live within me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
Political Debate
During his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his core platform – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his critics, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit although he came from a famous family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a venue for civic gatherings, and championed an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings a stark contrast to his humble Astoria home.
Adorned in pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.
Inside, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished consistent with the home's original era.
The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
His former home is rent stabilised, which means the city sets limits on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the cost of housing outpaces what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
