The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Silent Hill with Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a girl harboring several personalities within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct personas, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can take over at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips show the protagonist navigating a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The core gameplay loop involves managing the persona that emerges at a particular moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their heads are. Flowers are a recurring theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
