The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.

An new term came to light several months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is found only in Gaza, as stated by health professionals such as child health specialists. Normally, it is uncommon for physicians to treat a minor who has lost their entire family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of child amputees exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy in scores of doctors returning from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.

A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that atrocities are still being committed. Authorities rejects these allegations, consistent with how it disavows everything it is accused of. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its stated mission of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, apparently, is what global togetherness resembles.

Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be completely different.

Contradictory Principles

Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – roughly two times the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. An institution that initially championed peace has devolved into a cynical way to whitewash war.
