SNAP Payments Expected to Cease for 41 Million Amid Ongoing Federal Shutdown
Federal agriculture authorities declared this past weekend that monthly food benefits through a critical national support systems will not be distributed during the coming month amid the persistent government funding lapse.
Shutdown Extends Through Its Third Week
The federal closure was in its 25th day at the time of the statement, which followed demands from hundreds of House Democrats asking the department to access reserve accounts to cover November's food assistance.
“Bottom line, funds are depleted,” the department confirmed. “At this time, assistance will not be provided” starting next month.
National Consequences
Tens of millions of people rely on the regular assistance, as reported by federal data. In certain states, such as New Mexico, dependence on the program affects 21% of residents.
A memo obtained by journalists indicated that the department would not access contingency funding to cover next month's assistance.
Partisan Impasse
Lawmakers from both parties continue to disagree regarding how to finance and restart government operations.
Comments by the head of a prominent policy organization indicated that the White House could have acted to act sooner to ensure continuous assistance.
“Officials were able and expected to taken steps earlier to make arrangements to use these funds,” the statement continued. “Conversely, they might decide against it to secure political leverage” as Republicans seek to push upper chamber Democrats to vote for a spending bill to restart government operations.
Emergency Measures
State leaders from two affected states declared states of emergency this week to free up resources for hunger relief in anticipation of food benefits expiring next month.
