No less than 64 Dead in Rio de Janeiro's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Criminal Groups
No less than 64 people died in a law enforcement action against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's records.
Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of AlemĂŁo and Penha, government representatives said. More than 80 individuals were detained.
Violent conflicts broke out when approximately 2,500 security personnel entered the area on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho responded with armed resistance, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives stated.
The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "horrified" by the police operation, urging "prompt and effective investigations".
Operation Impact
The area of favelas near the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the main base of a major criminal organizations.
Government representatives said at least 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Numerous individuals were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
