Aaron Rai Wins Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Playoff Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff after a rollercoaster final round of play.
The Englishman nailed a crucial birdie from just over eight foot to clinch the win, echoing his sole prior tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff victory over Fleetwood.
Final Round Drama
Rai entered the last day with a single stroke advantage over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under final round that featured seven birdies and two bogeys.
The challenger moved one shot clear with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the final green.
Playoff Climax
This led to a playoff at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the title and $1.5m (ÂŁ1.13 million) in winnings.

Notable Contenders
The Northern Irish star left himself just too much to do, coming up one shot behind in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 closing round of 62. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever round on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdies and one eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdies of his as well, but his chances of leading the standings were dented by a dropped shot on the 12th. England’s Richard Mansell hit an excellent last round 63 to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australian Daniel Hillier.
